The gamble every owner already knows

Every Kemps Cannabis owner I talk to has the same story. A budtender interview goes fine. The person seems sharp, friendly, says the right things. Three weeks in, you find out they don't actually know the difference between an ounce limit and a possession limit, or they're guessing at what a valid medical card looks like. Now you've got a compliance exposure on your floor and a customer who walked out because the recommendation was wrong.

There is no license for this job. No state exam. No transcript. You're hiring on vibes and a resume, and in a regulated business that's a real risk, not just an inconvenience. I built WeedUs to solve problems retailers actually have, and this one kept coming up in every conversation: how do you know, before you hire someone, that they know the product and the law.

What we built

WeedUs Budtender Academy is a free Washington cannabis certification for budtenders, plus a directory that retailers pay to search. The training side is free because I want as many people as possible to go through it and get certified. The value for retailers is on the other side: a pool of candidates who have already proven what they know, filterable by city, so you're not sorting through applicants with no way to check their claims.

We also built a team training option, because certification shouldn't only apply to people you're thinking about hiring. It should apply to the people already on your floor. Owners can enroll their existing staff, assign seats, and track who's certified and who isn't, all measured against the same bar.

How it works, plainly

The curriculum is 4 courses, 20 modules, 112 lessons. All of it is Washington specific, not generic cannabis trivia. That matters because a lot of what a budtender needs to know (possession limits, ID requirements, what's legal to say about medical claims) is state law, not universal.

Each course ends in a secured, timed final exam, and you need 75% to pass. Across the four courses, that adds up to 174 questions total, all timed the same way, all graded the same way. Pass, and you get a real certificate with a public verification link, so anyone (a hiring manager, a compliance officer, another owner) can check that it's legitimate without taking your word for it.

On the retailer side, the directory lets you filter certified candidates by city. You're not scrolling through a stack of resumes hoping someone mentions they know the rules. You're looking at people who already sat the exam and cleared the bar.

What this means at Kemps

We built this with Kemps Cannabis in mind because Shawn's team deals with exactly this problem: filling floor positions with people who won't put the license at risk. Instead of hiring first and hoping the training sticks later, the certification comes first. A candidate showing up already certified means the interview conversation changes. You're not testing basic knowledge anymore. You're talking about fit, schedule, and how they handle a real customer.

For staff already on the floor, team training closes the same gap from the inside. You assign the courses, everyone sits the same 174 questions, and now your whole team is certified to a standard you can actually point to, not just tell people about.

The payoff

Hiring stops being a guess. You pull from a pool of people who are pre vetted on Washington law and product knowledge, and you train your own team to that same standard. Every certificate has a public link, so the credential means something to anyone who checks it, not just to us.

That's the whole idea. Turn a gamble into a pipeline.

Certify the knowledge first, and hiring a budtender stops being a bet and starts being a lookup.
